Buyers tune in to whole-house entertainment

Now that structured wiring is the norm in new homes, it comes as little surprise that prospective buyers have upped the ante for what they consider perks — broadband Internet, a workout room, home office, natural slate flooring, and, of course, distributed audio and whole-home theater systems.

"When a home isn’t built to install whole-home entertainment, it’s less attractive on a competitive angle,” says Jim Lee of Nuts About Hi-Fi, Silverdale, Wash. "More builders are coming to me saying they’re building houses for multiroom audio. We sit down with the plans and automatically ask, ‘If this were my house, what would I want?’”

A pre-wire package can cost from $3,000 for standard wiring to $55,000, which includes cabling, speaker chambers, and all the necessary equipment and controls. From their investment, builders can expect to make a profit of up to 20 percent, says Lee.

Taking advantage of the trend toward whole-home audio, several electronics companies have developed builder incentive programs in which the company provides the necessary cabling with the expectation that homebuyers will complete their systems post-sale. Builders stand to recoup their pre-wire investment even if only 25 percent of their customers choose to use the system, according to Stan Shields, director of Bose’s builder group. "We’ve structured the business model so that builders earn as much money on home entertainment systems as they do on their more conventional upgrades,” he notes. "Delight your homebuyer with a complete home entertainment system featuring a top brand, and earn profit by doing so.”

Distributed audio on the rise
The Consumer Electronics Association’s online Distributed Audio Survey indicates that only 9 percent of consumers have any level of familiarity with the industry term "distributed audio,” when referring to built-in multiroom sound. The phrase "whole-house audio” resonates best with buyers, with 23 percent recognizing that term.

Of consumers surveyed who do have distributed audio, 61 percent paid less than $1,000 for their system; 44 percent have audio in at least four rooms; and 53 percent said they would buy a distributed audio system again.

When consumers were asked what devices in their homes they most wanted hooked up to a multiroom audio system, the radio was listed first by 73 percent of respondents. A CD player came in second at 70 percent, and a DVD player was the third most-desired item to be hooked up (63 percent). The TV was fourth at 56 percent of respondents.

Furthermore, the National Association of Homebuilders says that high-tech features, including distributed audio and home theater systems, can be expected to gradually percolate down from high-end markets to the general market, "just as other features such as fireplaces, high ceilings and three-car garages have done over the years.”
